could yield surprise

ALBANY (AP) — While most of the attention over Gov. David Paterson's appointment of a U.S. senator centers on Caroline Kennedy and Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Paterson said he's examining a large and diverse field. The lineup includes:
• Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York City. In Congress since 1992, she has the support of three major women's groups and could be seen as attractive to women and Catholics.
• U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand. She just won her second term representing a large, traditionally Republican district in the Hudson Valley to north of Saratoga Springs. Read on..
