Pick the Yankees for at least the next three years
Since winning the 1958 World Series when Republican Dwight Eisenhower was president, all nine of the Yankees’ titles have come under Democratic administrations — 1961, 1962, 1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009.

Governor’s Corner
The People First
Governor Paterson's 2010 campaign released their first two television advertisements for the 2010 gubernatorial election. The two thirty-second ads, which will begin airing statewide on Friday, November 6, 2009, the ads focus on Governor David A. Paterson's life story and his accomplishments as governor.
Making the Hard Decisions
Governor David A. Paterson on November 5, 2009 signed a proclamation calling an extraordinary session of the Legislature to address the current-year deficit and additional legislation that was not finished at the end of session last June. In accordance with the proclamation, the Legislature will convene an extraordinary session on November 10 at noon. In addition to Governor Paterson’s Deficit Reduction Plan (DRP), the extraordinary session proclamation contains eight legislative items to be addressed by the Legislature; including the Governor’s proposed cap on State spending which includes a circuit-breaker property tax relief program, structural reforms to the State pension system and public authorities reform.
Let’s Go Yankees
“On behalf of all New Yorkers and baseball fans, I congratulate our World Series Champions, the Yankees. After a truly impressive season in a magnificent new stadium, the Bronx Bombers captured their 27th title – and, as I predicted just one week ago, they did it in six games. In celebration of their success, we are thrilled that two lucky New Yorkers will receive an all-expenses paid weekend in Philadelphia , hosted by my good friend, Governor Ed Rendell. I hope that they proudly wear their Yankees gear as they tour the Liberty Bell Center and enjoy brunch in Rittenhouse Square .
“This is a great day in New York and I look forward to joining the Champions and their fans at tomorrow’s ticker-tape parade.”
Governor David Paterson
Protecting New Yorkers
Governor David A. Paterson on November 2, 2009 submitted legislation to close a loophole to eliminate a statutory inconsistency that allows serious criminals to become eligible for parole earlier than intended. The current penal law permits repeat offenders convicted of first or second degree murder, first degree kidnapping, or another A-1 felony to receive credit on sentences for time served on a previous sentence. Serious repeat-offenders receiving these credits become eligible for parole earlier and serve proportionately less time than individuals convicted of a lesser crime. The loophole can also result in a murderer becoming eligible for medical parole far sooner than intended. Individuals convicted of less serious repeat felonies are not eligible for such credits.
From the Attorney General
Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo on November 4, 2009 filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC), the world’s largest maker of computer microprocessors. The suit charges that Intel violated state and federal anti-monopoly laws by engaging in a worldwide, systematic campaign of illegal conduct - revealed in e-mails - in order to maintain its monopoly power and prices in the market for microprocessors. Over the last several years, Intel has extracted exclusive agreements from large computer makers in which they agreed to use Intel’s microprocessors in exchange for payments totaling billions of dollars. Intel also threatened to and did in fact punish computer makers that they perceived to be working too closely with Intel’s competitors. Retaliatory threats included cutting off payments the computer maker was receiving from Intel, directly funding a computer maker’s competitors, and ending joint development ventures.
An Update from Comptroller DiNapoli
Roosevelt Union Free School District generally spent within the limits of its enacted 2009-10 budget in the first quarter but the district miscoded budget expenditures and failed to get board approval for $2.8 million in budget transfers, according to an audit released on November 6, 2009 by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. DiNapoli’s office has provided real-time fiscal monitoring of the school district since March 2007 to ensure the district controls spending and stays within its budget.
Statement from State Democratic Chair Jay Jacobs
STRONG PRINCIPLED LEADERSHIP
DEMOCRATS MAKE HISTORY WITH VICTORY IN NEW YORK ’S 23RD DISTRICT
Bill Owens pulled out an extraordinary victory in New York ’s 23rd Congressional District against the extreme right wing of a Republican Party in disarray, making him the first Democrat to hold that seat since the Civil War. An Air Force veteran and long-time community leader, Bill Owens represents the best of the Democratic Party and embodies our belief that government has to work for all to be successful.
Bill Owens entered this race to stand strongly with and for the people of upstate New York and to bring upstate values to Washington . President Obama and Vice President Biden both traveled to New York to show their full support for candidate Owens. Now, as our next Congressman from the 23rd district, Bill Owens will go to Washington to work along with the Administration to pass comprehensive health care reform, assistant in our country’s economic recovery, and lend his voice and experience to important discussions about national security and the future of our military in Afghanistan . Owens will continue his work to create new jobs and bring economic development to the 23rd District. He will ensure returning Veterans receive the respect and care they deserve and will serve as a strong voice for our farmers and ranchers in upstate New York , providing them with the support that they need to get the job done.
“We send our congratulations to Bill Owens for a race well run. He will be an honorable representative for the people of the 23rd District of New York,” said Jay S. Jacobs, Democratic State Chair. “The Democratic Party will not establish a litmus test for our candidates, like the one the Republicans imposed on their candidates in the 23rd. I’m proud to be a part of a Democratic Party that represents all of the working people of New York .”
“I would also like to congratulate and thank our very own June O’Neill, Chair of the Executive Committee. June’s tireless efforts and leadership in the 23rd Congressional District on behalf of the State Democratic Party made this victory possible.”
The State Democratic Committee deployed troops to knock on doors, make countless phone calls, and helped to get Owens' message out to the voters of the 23rd Congressional district.
Democrats also achieved two important victories in New York City .
NEW YORK CITY
CITY COMPTROLLER
John Liu, whose historic victory in New York City as the newly elected City Comptroller and first Asian-American elected to a city-wide office in New York , will bring financial reforms and accountability back to the City. John will start on Day 1 to spur economic growth and bring jobs to New York City by investing in infrastructure, maximizing federal stimulus dollars, diversifying investments, reforming the City’s contract process and investing in affordable housing.
PUBLIC ADVOCATE
Strong, dedicated and persistent, Bill de Blasio will bring a record of achievement to the office of Public Advocate ensuring that New Yorkers have a voice in shaping the policies of their government. Endorsed by leaders across the political and ideological spectrum, Bill has the support to hold government accountable, the strength to defend the rights of New Yorkers and the determination to get results.
MAYOR
Democrats are proud of our candidate for Mayor. In a race that was much tighter than anyone predicted, Bill Thompson mounted a strong challenge to Bloomberg and his millions, speaking for disenfranchised voters across the City. We recognize Bill Thompson’s outstanding record of service as President of the Board of Education and as our City’s Comptroller. Thompson is a tireless champion for working people and has the courage to talk about the issues that matter most. Bill has dedicated his life to building a City that works for everyone, not just the privileged few.

Congressman-elect Bill Owens Announces Support for House Healthcare Legislation
Plattsburgh, NY – Congressman-elect Bill Owens today announced his support for H.R. 3962, the "Affordable Healthcare for America Act." The bill will provide affordable, quality healthcare for all Americans and reduce the growth in healthcare spending.
"This legislation will reform the insurance industry and provide increased access to affordable healthcare without taxing healthcare benefits, cutting Medicare benefits or raising taxes on the middle class, and that is exactly the direction we need to go," said Owens. "There are still changes I would like to make, including raising the payroll exemption for small businesses, but like I said last week, there is a fundamental need for reform and we must act with a sense of urgency. This plan will reign in costs, strengthen the middle class and protect our economy from additional debt down the road.”
In addition, Owens showed concern for provisions that would prevent paper producers from receiving a tax credit for the production of certain wood by-products. "Forestry and the paper-products industry are incredibly important to our community, and I will be looking for way to ensure that they are not unduly burdened in any healthcare legislation," Owens said.
During his campaign for Congress, Owens showed consistent support for legislation that would end pre-existing condition exclusions, reign in spending, protect small businesses and keep middle-class taxes low.
H.R. 3962 would end the ability of insurance companies to deny care based on pre-existing conditions, and would reduce the federal deficit by $104 billion over the next decade. The bill also includes an exemption for small businesses with a payroll of less than $500,000. Congressman-elect Owens has stated his desire to see this exemption raised to include a greater percentage of operations considered small businesses. In addition, the bill is paid for without taxing healthcare benefits or raising middle class income-taxes.
This legislation is endorsed by AARP and the American Medical Association, among other organizations.

Congressman Bill Owens Addresses House Floor Following Swearing-In.
"Madam Speaker,
"I am honored to be here with you all today, and to join you in our continuing effort to build a better, stronger America. This is a proud day for me and my family but it is also a sad day for our country. The shooting at Fort Hood last night that claimed the lives of 13 fine Americans is a stunning reminder of how quickly the peace we enjoy here at home can turn to violence, and how heavily we rely on our brave men and women to keep us free from harm. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims, and with our soldiers to whom we owe our safety and our freedom.
"I'd like to thank my family for being with me, and for standing behind me every step of the way. To my wife, Jane, my three children, Jenna, Tara and Brendan, and my three grandchildren Caroline, Tommy and Tess, I know that I could never have made it without you, and I am grateful for your support and for all the laughs we had along the way.
"I also want to thank the people of New York's Twenty Third Congressional District, whose work I begin today. Conscious of the challenges that face us, I am eager to join my colleagues in finding bipartisan solutions to health care, energy, our farm crisis and our struggling economy.
"My family and I came to Plattsburgh when I transferred to Plattsburgh Air Force Base. When I left the Air Force, we decided to stay and make our home in Upstate New York but I remained committed to serving my country and my community. That's what I have tried to do throughout my life in Upstate New York, and is the reason I ran for Congress.
"I am proud to begin a new chapter of service to my country and remain hopeful that if we continue seeking out bipartisan solutions to the problems that face us, we can build a brighter future for our children and grandchildren. I pledge to work hard each and every day that I am honored to serve to see this come to light.
"Thank you"

THE CENTER HOLDS--MODERATION PREVAILS-- BILL OWENS WINS--THE CLUB FOR GROWTH LOSES
Thank you.
When we began this journey, a lot of people didn’t give us much of a chance. They didn’t think the people of Upstate New York were ready to set aside partisanship, and all the things that divide us, in favor of finding commonsense solutions to the challenges that unite us.
Upstate New York hasn’t received this much attention since the Miracle on Ice. And tonight with the entire country watching, Upstate New Yorkers sent a message.
We came together tonight as Democrats, Republicans, and Independents to seek solutions – to create jobs for our workers, to bring economic development back to our communities, to fight for Fort Drum, and to give all middle class families in Upstate New York a fair shake from Washington.
Tonight, the voters in this election sent the message loud and clear: when it comes to getting our economy moving again, to creating good-paying jobs for our workers, to ending tax breaks for companies that send jobs overseas, and for making Upstate New York a leader in producing clean energy, they put aside partisanship and declared they’re ready to move forward, not backward.
There are so many people to thank tonight. First and foremost, my thanks to the people of New York’s 23rd Congressional District.
You are the ones who proved that elections aren’t decided by pundits or polls. You rejected the false attacks and the partisan divisions and decided that when it comes to confronting the challenges we face, we’re all in this together. Tonight’s victory is your victory.
I am humbled by your support and I pledge to honor your trust by working every day to bring jobs and opportunity back to Upstate New York.
My thanks to President Obama for his extraordinary leadership for our country and his support for my campaign. My thanks to Vice President Biden as well, who was here with me just yesterday. I look forward to working with our President and Vice President to bring commonsense solutions to create jobs here and get our economy back on track.
Thank you to my wife Jane and our three amazing kids. All campaigns, especially one this hard-fought, require families to sacrifice. I am grateful to them for giving up so much for me. I would not be standing here without their love and support every day.
I must give special thanks to Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava. I was honored to earn the support of a great leader like her. She has always put the people of Upstate New York before any partisan agenda. I share her commitment and I look forward to working with her to help the people of this district.
I’d like to thank our outstanding Senators from New York – Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who worked hard for my campaign and work even harder for the people of New York in the U.S. Senate.
My thanks also go out to the outstanding Members of New York’s Congressional delegation, especially Congressmen Steve Israel and Paul Tonko.
I look forward to joining the outstanding men and women of New York’s Congressional delegation to move our state and our country forward.
Thank you to my friends in organized labor, who spread my message of creating jobs and opportunity for working people across Upstate. I am grateful to all of the volunteers who gave their time to knock on doors, dial phones, and helped me spread the word about what’s at stake in this election.
My thanks to Secretary John McHugh, who spent 16 years representing Upstate New York in Congress with honor, with integrity, and always with a sincere desire to put the best interests of Upstate families first.
Finally, I want to thank to Doug Hoffman on his campaign. I look forward to working with him and his supporters in the months ahead to work together as New Yorkers to find solutions to the challenges we face together.
I began this campaign to bring a new kind of leadership to Washington – one that focuses on finding the commonsense solutions we need right now.
As I go forward now to Washington, I’m going to work with Republicans, Democrats, and Independents to do just that so we can –
Get our economy back on track with good paying jobs and investments in clean energy here in Upstate New York.
Protect our dairy farmers, who are struggling because they’re not getting a fair price for their milk.
Fight for health care reform, so that our middle class families have quality, affordable care and our businesses can become more competitive in the global economy.
Fight for Fort Drum – to make sure that it stays strong. In the Army, we pledge to leave no solider behind, and I will fight just as hard to make sure that we leave no veteran behind when they come home.
Our challenges aren’t Democratic or Republican. They’re not liberal or conservative. They are American challenges that we will overcome with American resolve.
The only way that we can create jobs and attract economic development to our communities is by bringing people of all parties together and giving everyone a seat at the table.
That’s what I’ve done through out my career and now, thanks to what you did in this election, that’s exactly what I’ll do for you every day as your Representative in Congress.
Thank you.

Does this ad scare the hell out of you? It should.
Yesterday's Post Standard listed judgments of over $205,000 against people that couldn't pay for their treatment because they had no insurance. That's only in one county and it amounts to over $13,000,000 per year. If you take nothing else into the voting booth with you, take this one fact and understand that Doug Hoffman thinks our Healthcare system works just fine. Then make your choice.
Right wing ideologues from across the country have committed all of their resources to winning this race, and we need to stop them. That's why we need you to get out and vote today. Use the tool below to find your polling place.

Bill Owens Rally at the North Side Improvement League
Sunday, November 1, 2009
A note a short time ago from the DCCC
Today, the moderate Republican threw her support behind our proud Democratic candidate Bill Owens.
It has never been clearer that the Republican Party has been hijacked by extreme right wing ideologues with a radical agenda that would effectively dismantle Social Security and Medicare, and are out of step with a vast majority of Americans.
Eight extreme right wing groups spent more than $1 million on this campaign including the Minute Men, Club for Growth and the Family Research Council.
This means your work and your continued support and dedication have never been more critical as we face our one-year-out reporting deadline and this election on Tuesday.
We are up against a well-funded extremist GOP who will stop at nothing to win and whose agenda could quite literally take us backwards to the days of Bush-Cheney.
But, you and I can't let that happen. I will continue to keep you posted on news of this race continues and thank you again for standing with us. We will need you now more than ever.
Thanks,
Jon Vogel
DCCC Executive Director
Holy Crap! Son-of-a-bitch! You ready for this? You had better sit down.
The Watertown Daily Times has endorsed a Democrat in the New York State 23rd. Congressional district race. Yes a Democrat! A donkey! Someone other than a Republican!
I am speechless. What do I say next after 60 years of my ragging on and my teasing of the Watertown Daily Times editors for breathing nothing other than elephant breath.
That's right, they are endorsing Bill Owens. It has been there on the WatertownDailyTimes.com site for hours now, with no retraction. They even said:
"The Watertown Daily Times initially endorsed Ms. Scozzafava as the best-qualified candidate in the race. We still think she is. However, in suspending her campaign she released her supporters' commitment to her. That left voters to choose between Mr. Owens and Mr. Hoffman.
Of the two, Bill Owens is by far the superior and only choice.....
The Times endorses Bill Owens for Congress."
I am going outside now and get some exercise, clear my head and lower my blood pressure. Then I am coming back in to check the net, verify that this Times endorsement is not just a dream and then continue with my thesis that Jefferson's Leaning Left.
